butterflies around the flame August 31, 2016 She had to admit, she enjoyed his wit. Vera wasn’t the type to get butterflies over anyone. She’d never met a person, or seen someone, who’d given her that tingly, excited feeling she’d heard people talk about. And this admittedly wasn’t an exception to that fact. But she liked Malachai. The longer she was around him the warmer she felt. He was endearing and she was enjoying his company. That wasn’t something she’d been able to say about any guy in her life other than her brother and grandpa. Most of the time she wanted to high-kick their balls. Granted, it was still the same day. Guys had been tolerable at first before. With that sobering thought screeching it’s way up to the forefront of her mind, Vera clicked her tongue in thought. He bowed and held his arm out for her, and Vera couldn’t help the smirk that twisted at the corner of her lips. Still, she was hesitant to reach out and touch him - to toss gasoline on a fire she wasn’t sure was there or not. Subtly sliding the sleeve of her sweatshirt over her hand, she hooked it in the crook of his elbow and curtsied. ”Lead the way, Good Sir!”Snickering softly under her breath, she shook her head at her own awkwardness and then fell in step with him. Her hand remained tucked in his elbow as he lead her out of the Corvus common room and back into the winding, maze-like hallways. ”So, Slip N’ Slide and Stair Jumping Competitions? I’ve come to the right place.”template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

feels like i got wings August 31, 2016 His lip quirked up in a smile as he watched Vera slide her sweatshirt sleeve over her hand before taking his arm. She reminded him of a more endearing and adorable version of Gabriella. Leading her back through the castle, he pointed out other classes for her as they passed by. He could feel the heat from her on his arm, but the close proximity didn't affect him any worse than it already had. " Don't worry, this place looks a lot more confusing than it really is. And hey, you don' 'affta worry about moving staircases 'ere." Malachai smiled slightly. While he had never attended Hogwarts, he had definitely heard the horror stories about the staircases that would move at the most random times. Granted, the Corvus mind in him would love to sit in the hall and try and pin point the rhyme or reason. " You definitely picked the most interestin' place." A soft chuckle escaped his mouth as they walked the deserted road towards the small town. " Headmaster Beauregard is definitely...different. You'll find that out pretty quick. All the professors actually, aren't really what you would think. Except Professor Pierce, who is also our Head of House. He's pretty no-nonsense and clinical. The other professors though...well, I wouldn't even know where to begin..."Vera definitely had no idea what she was getting herself into at this school. He wondered if he should mention what Cory said he was going to be working on for his 8th year focus... template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

butterflies around the flame August 31, 2016 Underneath the darkness of his sunglasses and the dip of her beanie, Vera paid close attention to the quirks and tips that Malachai pointed out as he walked her through and out of the castle. She had planned on, after scouting trails in the forest, walking the school to get her lay of the land and figure out the best paths for getting to class. It was something she hadn’t done at Ilvermorny that had come back and bit her in the ass later. Stepping into the boy’s locker room after a rowdy quidditch practice had been quite the eye-opener. Luckily for her, at only eleven, her “effect” as she called it wasn’t very powerful yet. She’d been considered “cute” and peers wanted to protect her. It was interesting noticing the changes of people’s endearment toward her after that. Even some professors. Vera glanced up at Malachai as they stepped back out to the courtyard and started walking down the road in the direction the sign pointed. Chillhorn Village. It sounded quaint, but then again Switzerland towns either sounded quaint or confusing, she’d decided. She still struggled to wrap her tongue around “Grosshöchstetten”. Antonio, her aunt’s late husband’s lover, had nearly spit out his drink in laughter at Vera’s attempt to pronounce the town’s name. Chillhorn was much, much easier in comparison and she was grateful she wouldn’t be embarrassing herself in front of Malachai too badly. As they walked, Vera grew more and more comfortable with him. It had been some time now since they’d passed the point where if Malachai wanted to hurt her, he could. He still kept walking, arm bent and her hand nestled in his elbow, and telling her about Beauregard and the many different personalities she’d encounter. ”So no sarcasm with Professor Pierce, then.”She turned her head to look at a sign as the road split off. Half a kilometer to Chillhorn, that was… roughly a third of a mile? Vera was surprised at how long they’d been walking. She turned her chin up to Malachai thoughtfully. ”What about the Charms Professor? I think it’s, mmm…” Vera hummed in thought and looked down at her slippers as she searched her memory for the name. Elsa had given her a list of professor’s names before she joined the school. The woman had done her research on the academy and wanted Vera to be just as prepared. ”Berkley, I’m pretty sure. And Ancient Ruins? Pip - Pippindor….? No. Hmmm. Anyway. They were admittedly my favorite subjects back at Ilvermorny.”Her head lifted back up and she smiled distantly, Then, suddenly, she snapped the fingers on her free hand and grinned. ”Pippindorio! I was close. Professor Pippindorio’s class.”template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

feels like i got wings August 31, 2016 The sun kept the walk at a comfortable temperature as they made their way down the road. It was quiet and rather nice out. Sometimes this area reminded him of home...minus of course the lack of farm animal sounds. Granted though, he saw some of the creatures that the new Care of Magical Creatures professor was bringing in and he had an inkling the silence wouldn't last. " I think sarcasm is a lost art on Professor. Pierce. He also is incredibly...clean." That was a nice way to put how OCD the man could be. While Malachai like things neat and in order, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher took it to a whole new level. With his free hand, he brushed some of his hair out of his face as he looked down at her. " Professor Berkley." He nodded. " She can look like a hardass, with all the tattoos and what not, but she's a good teacher. So don't let her looks fool you. She cares a lot. Went through a nasty divorce a couple years ago. One of those open secret things. She is a Hogwarts alum"An amused grin crossed his face as she remembered Pippindorio's name. " Ah....Professor Pippindorio...He...well, he definitely makes Ancient Runes rather interesting. Sometimes in class, we barely make it through one because he goes off on a tangent...Him and Pierce really don't get along. They're like...the antithesis of eachother." He laughs. " I think you'll like both classes here. I don't know how things are run in Ilvermorny, but here it's definitely more of a focused approach on each student and what they want and are good at."Malachai was rambling a bit and he gave her a slightly embarrased look as he realised it. " So if you had been going to Ilvermorny, what brings you here?" The gates of the village appeared before them as they entered. There were more people here as they made their way through and he lead her to the small clothing store. template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

butterflies around the flame August 31, 2016 She preferred it when he was talking - giving her lots of insight into the school and the people inside of it. As they approached the town, Vera’s eyes danced over the little swiss village with a distant smile. Her grandmother would have loved this place. Vera could imagine her clutching at her bag and nearly hopping up and down like a child as she would point out the old architecture and antique-like storefronts. The sweets shop would have her gleefully spending all their money on candy and then faking an apology to her husband as he pointed out that teenagers needed more than sugar to get by. "So if you had been going to Ilvermorny, what brings you here?"Vera’s expression morphed into something guarded. The wounds of losing her grandparents were still fresh, and the scabs started to bleed easily if picked at. She licked her lips and cleared her throat as he lead her up to the steps of a small clothing shop. She broke away from him to run her fingers along several hangers; frowning not at the clothing but at the memories that welled in her eyes. ”My Aunt thought it’d be best if I transferred.”Rolling her lips together, she busied herself with finding pieces of clothing that could get her by until her brother sent her her actual suitcase. As the silence stretched between them, Vera turned her head to look at him, thankful that his sunglasses helped hide the emotions undoubtedly churning in her eyes. She’d never been very good at keeping her thoughts and feelings out of her gaze. Her grandfather used to call her pure because of that. ”My grandparents died, and my mom is a raging alcoholic barely capable of taking care of herself, let alone her kids, so my Aunt took me and my brother in and moved us here.”The way she spoke was sharp; as if she were spitting daggers between her teeth. She heard it, but it was too late to take it back. Instead she turned and reached her hand up to rake her fingers through her hair; grabbing her hat before it could fall again. Taking in a breath, she exhaled it in a slow sigh before stepping a couple paces away to the next rack. ”Sorry,” came the much softer tone a few breaths later as she glanced over her shoulder at him; a few pairs of jeans and shirts draped over her arm. ”Anger issues…”Guess Vera got more than just her looks from her mother. template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

There was a slight shift in her demeaner and Malachai wondered if he had gone too far. Putting his foot into his mouth was nothing new, but normally it didn't happen so quickly. She pulled away and he didn't hesitate to let her, lest she think he was trying to control her in some way. As she looked over the small selection of clothes, he couldn't help but subtly watch her. It wasn't the way men looked and leered after a woman they wanted, but rather a look touched with concern at the way she was acting. He knew that sort of reaction. It was how a person acted when something big happened to them and they were wrestling with if they should talk about it. He knew it very well, because it was something he himself went through a few years ago. Her aunt thought she should transfer? That didn't seem all that weird to him at first, many people he knew had been raised by people other than their parents. But then her next works sunk in and he felt his heart go out to her. it was obvious she had been close to her grandparents. If he could have reached out to give her a hug, Malachai would have. But she had already moved away and he didn't want to intrude into her space at a moment like this. Instead, he gave her a kind smile. " You have nothin to apologise for, Vera. Loss is hard and so is dealing with addicts. You're allowed to be angry." He pointed her at the dressing room if she wanted to try clothes on. " Believe me, I understand that all too well..." He gave her a sad smile. " I've always found archery to help though. Have you tried that?"template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

butterflies around the flame August 31, 2016 Vera didn’t know what she expected from Malachai in response, but the understanding in his eyes and the kind tone of his voice was not it. She paused with the clothing cradled in her arms and studied him from behind the shield of his sunglasses; her expression carefully neutral before she exhaled slowly and the barest smile tinted her lips. Turning, she moved into the dressing room and closed the door behind her. Hanging the garments up on the wall, she finally took the sunglasses off of her face and set them on top of her beanie. Looking at herself in the small mirror hanging in the closet-sized room, Vera reached up to comb her fingers through her hair and smooth it down some. She loved her beanie, but it made her hair a frizzy, static mess. ”I haven’t tried Archery, no,” She responded from inside of the dressing room. Her eyes flickered briefly over her face before she turned her back and gathered her hair up in a ponytail to keep it out of the way. She changed quickly and efficiently; simply making sure the clothes fit. She picked out simple items. Blue and black denim, and several plain T-shirts that would serve as easy outfits to get through the next few days. Keeping on one pair of the blue jeans, a blank tank that hung loosely around her midsection, Vera stepped out of the dressing room with the rest of the belongings in a bundle in her arms. The owner of the clothing shop came over and offered to hold her items at the front. Vera smiled gratefully and handed them over to her, as well as the tags for the items she was still wearing. With her hair up and away from her face, nothing on to help break up that allure, she moved quickly. ”I started welding, though, when I was ten. It helps some, but not always.”She shrugged, as if all of a sudden nothing she was talking about was a big deal. She shoved it all down into the center of her and tightened the lid. She could almost hear her grandmother’s exasperation. Plucking a zip-up hoodie from the rack, she put it on and snapped the tag. It never occurred to her that it wasn’t polite, though the shop owner didn’t seem to mind. It was just something she’d always done when she went shopping. She’d walk out with the clothes on, tags presented to the cashier to ring her up. Zipping the hoodie up, she moved then to the shoes. Checking the size of a pair of red sneakers, she switched over from her slippers and then plucked a quick pair of aviator sunglasses from the wall near the cashier’s desk. Handing over the tags, she slipped on the sunglasses and hat again as she waited. The elderly woman clicked her tongue. ”Such beauty! You should not hide.”Vera’s smile was small, but genuine as she handed over her aunt’s charmed credit card. ”Thank you.”Reaching out and taking the bags from the woman, Vera turned and followed Malachai out of the doors and to the streets beyond. She exhaled softly and then looked up at him, holding his sunglasses out for him now that she had her own. ”Thanks for letting me borrow these.”Shifting the bags into her free hand, Vera tucked her hand into her hoodie pocket and looked up and down the street. ”So, are you in a hurry to get back to campus, or can I buy you a coffee as a thank you?”Returning her eyes back up to him, she licked her lips and shrugged her shoulders before dropping her gaze again. ”If you want to, anyway. It’s okay if you don’t.”template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

Now, if there was one thing the Corvus boy knew, it was when he was being studied. The whys behind it could frequently be lost on him, but he could tell. Granted, it was easy to tell when the person was looking at you. Although, with his sunglasses covering her eyes she could have been looking anywhere really. "Well, I am always willing to teach you. Anyone actually. It can be calmin' when you want to be angry, you know?" Malachai leaned against the wall as she tried on her clothes. He would give her credit, it seemed like no time at all until she was done, stepping out in a completely different outfit. "No more kitties?"His smile was genuine though at her before he rubbed his nose and had to inhale softly. Even though he knew that she had Veela blood, he could still feel the allure. This time though, he managed to not make a fool out of himself. Preparation was always the key. Still, he would rather like to find some spell or charm that could help her. As Vera covered her hair and eyes back up, he couldn't help but shake his head softly, agreeing with the elderly woman. Granted, he most likely wouldn't say that out loud, because he didn't want the American girl to think it was only from her Veela allure he thought she was a beauty. "It's not a problem, really." The sunglasses were warm in his hand from being on her as he took off his normal glasses and magicked them safely away. Then he covered his own eyes with the sunglasses as they headed back onto the main street, his actions mirroring hers as he looked down the road. "I'm not in any particular rush, no. You don't have to buy me a coffee though. I mean, I..yes. I would like to get some coffee, but you don't need to pay for it." he gave her an easy smile, pretending to ignore the way she licked her lips and how he stumbled over his own words. "There is a cafe down this way."Nodding his head a direction, he lead her down the road towards a small, in the hole looking coffee shop. It really didn't look like a whole lot, but Malachai would swear by their food. It was fantastic. The food at the castle was good, but sometimes it was nice to step out and have a good ol'fashioned meal somewhere else. He moved ahead of her so he could open the door, smiling as she moved past him and into the small cafe. "Try not to judge it yet." he leaned down, whispering to her. Not too close though, so she wouldn't flip out at him. Then he straightened up and motioned her to the counter. It was one of those order first type places, then they brought the food out to you. The gentleman behind the counter smiled when he saw the young wizard. "School is back in session?""It is in a few days! Headmaster Beauregard apparently pushed back term until the fifth." He smiled as the other man laughed. "I think just the coffee for me today, and whatever she wants."'And what would the young miss like today?' the older gentleman smiled at Vera. butterflies around the flame August 31, 2016 She tried not to get defensive when it was apparent that her Veela blood affected him, but it was difficult. She struggled with the balancing act of understanding it wasn't their fault and feeling angry and hurt over never being able to trust that someone liked her for her. And what sixteen year old didn’t want to be liked, no matter what front they presented to the world? Out of most her age (give or take a few years) though, Malachai was clearly attempting to make it as easy as possible on her instead of himself. It was something that did not go unnoticed. ”I could see how archery would come in handy,” She mused, imagining firing a few arrows at some unwelcome persons. She definitely wasn’t about to explain that thought out loud, though. She didn’t want to give Malachai an excuse to not teach her should she decided to try. As they walked toward the cafe, Vera adjusted the bags in her hands and then moved to grab the door. Malachai was there first, pulling it open for her and she smirked up at him before stepping past. Her eyes danced over the inside of the cafe; noting the small smattering of patrons sitting at booths and tables. She thought it was cute, and looked up at Malachai over her shoulder as he advised her not to judge it yet. Her lips curved into a smirk, and she shook her head as she stepped in line behind him to approach the counter. Tilting her head up to look over the menu essentials, Vera stepped up when she was spoken to. Her smile was friendly when she looked to the older man, trusting her hat and glasses to dull enough of her “impact” that there wouldn’t be a scene or embarrassment for anyone involved. ”The same for me, please,” She said as she handed her card out to the man. While Malachai had been ordering, she’d pulled it out from her pocket again and held it at the ready. ”And a blueberry muffin.”template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0

August 31, 2016 " Archery is definitely handy. We go hunting a lot too back home so yeah." If Malachai had known that thoughts going through her head about shooting people, he would have laughed about it. Nothing would have stopped him from teaching her. He found himself enjoying spending time with her. She was easy to talk to and just as snarky. He watched her from the corner of his eye as she decided on what to eat. It made the allure lessen quite a bit, and it made it easier for him to study her a bit better. Not studying her like the creepers that couldn't control themselves, but studying her in a way ...fuck he didn't know. While he hadn't been paying attention, she bought their drinks and food. " Oi...I told you you didn't hafta do that!" He couldn't help the slight flush from embarrasment. Feeling all unmanned. Goodnaturedly of course. Their coffee came and they took it to go. The walk back to the castle was comfortable. At least the Irish wizard thought so. He was also trying to figure out if it was too soon for him to ask her on a date. Or would she think he was only interested because of the Veela aspect? A phone chime cut through his thoughts as her phone went off and he nodded as she answered it. They were coming up to the castle anyways, and she had to go. " Well, don't be a stranger then Vera. You know where to find me, yeah?" He took a sip of his coffee, the question on the tip of his tongue but he decided against it. Not yet. Instead he waved goodbye and watched her leave to talk to her aunt. template by Sammy @ Adox 2.0
