It had been a month in this school and Sterling Johnson was still working on figuring out where everything was. Lucky for him, the professors were pretty chill and understanding. Well....except for Pierce. It wouldn't matter to the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor if he came in late because of a broken leg. He was pretty sure that he would just get that same old ice cold look to shut up and sit his ass down. In fact once he came in hobbling from a twisted ankle and it was not so much as an 'Are you ok?'.
Rude dude. Just rude.
Today though he made his way out of the concrete jungle and into the wilderness. The first half of his day was spent wandering around the forest before he made his way to the lake. Promptly he fell backwards on the shore and stared up at the clouds. Being in a foreign country was weird, and he was still trying to get used to all the accents and weird food. And the weird castle. Weird people. And he couldn't surf and that sucked.
At least he had some of his friends back, and he'd made new ones. Like Abbie, one of his housemates. But for today, he escaped a small bag with some food and a book, content to try to just recharge in the silence for once.
Except of course, his mind wouldn't stop.
Instead he was thinking of this Masquerade dance thing that they apparently did. The days were ticking closer and he hadn't asked anyone yet. Regina had her boyfriend. Kingston had his. God, even Abbie was going with someone, Percy. And here he was, still working on feeling out his new school and who was with who.
Grumbling to himself he pulled out his book and flipped to his marked page.
Something wrong with you Sterling. Just ask someone. You know you wanna. You know you'e been watchin' someone.
Creepy, inner Sterling. Accurate, but creepy. Flipping a page, he willed his creepy internal monologue to shut the hell up.

Sterling Johnson An autumn breeze whipped through his messy dark hair as leaves crunched under foot – the fall season had truly set as had talk of the Halloween masquerade ball. It was a tradition which Thomas wasn’t completely against – Halloween was one of his more favourite holidays after all it had sweets, scary stories, pumpkin carving. What wasn’t there to love! Sure there was the crippling fear of not being asked to go by anybody but those fears were quashed by safe knowledge that he’d be with his friends. Or so he hoped. He bit his bottom lip as his thoughts began to dwell on the topic. Hadn't it always been that way.
They're probably going to leave you all by yourself this year
Shaking his head Thomas banished the thoughts from his mind. He had better things to do than worry over that – if only his anxiety agreed with that sentiment. Today his plans consisted of homework and reading at his favourite chill zone the lake. Thomas loved the calmness of the lake especially in the colder seasons when it was almost always empty – it was the perfect place to process his thoughts and put everything in order.
With his satchel bag hung haphazardly over his shoulder Thomas buried his hands in the overly long sleeves of his jumper. The path to the lake was worn and covered in every shade of autumn and every footstep crunched. It wasn’t until he’d arrived at the bank of the lake that he noticed another person there. Ready to make a U turn and find a different spot Thomas turned quickly on his heel – a little too quickly without warning his foot slipped backwards on a slippery patch of moss and Thomas fell backwards with a loud thud.
“Oh christ - sorry,” said Thomas sheepishly, looking upwards “I didn’t mean to interrupt you. I was going to leave but then I slipped- ” he was rambling now, and he couldn’t stop. Why was he like this? "I can leave."

'Even in the supernatural world that's weird. Somehow, the tiny little garden sized bronze statue of the tiger had found a way to become a full sized beast made of solid gold, and it was fucking alive!’
Sterling couldn't help the laugh as he continued in his book. Poor Graves was really in a bit of trouble wasn't he? The Vulpecula boy couldn't blame the character though, he'd be running like hell too if a tiger statue came to life and started chasing him. At least he had a wand. Maybe Virdi should consider that for Vincent.
Chuckling, he was absorbed in his book, his inner monologue turning off. It was a nice moment, with the soft breeze brushing past that he didn't even notice the crunch of leaves. It was until he heard the sound of someone falling that he practically jumped out of his skin expecting to see a tiger ready to pounce…
Instead he saw dark hair and a sheepish smile, followed by a rambling apology.
Ask and you shall receive.
Oh cool. Creepy inner monologue was back.
”It's really not a prob.” Sterling grinned as he put in his book mark and sat up. ”I mean, it's not like I have claimed this area in my name or anything. I guess I could make a little flag and do that, but it sounds like a lot of work.”
Setting his copy of Grave Beginnings on top of his bag, he crossed his legs, smile still on his face. ”You're Thomas right? I'm Sterling.” Yeah. Because it wasn't creepy to know his name already right?

Sterling Johnson Oh god, he’d made the poor guy jump half a mile – what idiot slipped over moss? Apparently he did, the term inconspicuous was completely lost on him or at least in this one moment it was. His cheeks burn bright red contrasting the alabaster white of his skin, there was no way he could avoid the embarrassment now, no way could he style his mishap out as anything else. His friends were going to love this story… Another one they could add to their collection of Thomas incidents. At least it wasn’t as bad as the time he’d skidded into the potion supply closest…
Deep breath. Calm your breathing The last thing he needed to do was go full panic attack on the guy. A very cute guy who didn’t seem to annoyed at him. Though he wasn’t sure if that made the situation any better or worse.
He chuckled at the flag comment. “Yes, I suppose a flag would be a bit of overkill.” Said Thomas pretending to ponder over the suggestion. He pulled himself up into a sitting position and brushed the loose flakes of dirt off of his knees, “Although I guess it’d make for a good warning sign for clumsy people like me.” He smiled when Sterling introduced himself and nodded. “That’s me, nice to meet you Sterling.” He wasn’t quite sure how Sterling knew his name they must have had a class together he was terrible with names.
“Oh are you reading out here to?” asked Thomas curiously as he eyed the book in Sterling’s hands. “Me to, I mean it’s really the only place you can get some peace and quiet sometimes.” He smiled.

'There was no way Sterling could not find the way Thomas' cheeks flared up endearing. It was too adorable. He smiled brightly at the newcomer as he got comfortable before chuckling at the comment about clumsy people.
"Yeah, figured I'd take a break from getting lost in the castle and harassed by my friends to lay out here." He looked down at his book before looking back up. "I'm reading a fun urban fantasy. You're welcome to join me, I really don't bite. Not normally at least." Laughing he rapped his fingers over the cover of his book.
You could ask him you know.
Yes, he did know inner monologue. He also knew he didn't have to just jump right out with that. Plus he really didn't know if the Equuleus was going with anyone. Patience was a virtue right?
You suck at patience.
Okay that was also true. But still.
"What are you reading?"

Sterling Johnson . He couldn’t help but return Sterling’s smile and nodding in reply. “Oh sweet, I don’t know too many from that genre so you’ll have to recommend me some titles. I’m gothic horror fan myself.” he said holding up a dog eared and worn copy of Mary Shelleys Frankenstein Because really there was nothing better than scaring yourself silly on cold autumn days. Muggle lit. You couldn’t beat it.
“It’s a confusing castle” mused Thomas, “I used to get so lost in my first year here– sometimes I still do – I swear you take one wrong turn and you’re lost for the rest of the day…” he chuckled as he recounted the his many late appearances to classes. His professors sure loved that… But what could they really expect from a twelve year old with no sense of direction. Hell he was seventeen now and that sense of direction hadn’t really improved...
Perhaps the castle was enchanted that way. He’d heard of moving staircases at other schools would it be so far of stretch to suggest that the founders would play such a trick on the students? Though if Sterling was having trouble finding his way perhaps Thomas could help.
“Oh I could show you around if you’d like?” said Thomas, “I mean I’m not a great tour guide but I’m pretty sure I know my way around here.”
AN- I'm sorry this post is crappy, my Thomas muse sucks tonight.
