Emma sat with her back pressed up against the corridor, watching as familiar (and unfamiliar) faces passed by in a blur. Her fingertips gripped the barn owl quill that rested on her notebook, dots of ink splattering the page as she scratched a few notes. People watching during the class change was one of her favorite things to do — it allowed her the chance to decompress from the day and free her mind from the confines of her classes. It allowed her the opportunity to think further.
It wasn’t until she heard a bang to her left that she realized she had been staring at a boy for far longer than she should have. A blush rose to her cheeks as she slammed the journal closed and tucked it into her satchel.
A few meters away, she found herself in one of the open courtyards, full of smiling people. Her eyes scanned the new scenario, watching with child-like wonder as a few fireworks shot off into the courtyard’s air. Celebrating the end of the day… She thought, as another firework launched into the air.
It didn’t take her long to find the group responsible and her eyes settled on a familiar looking blonde who seemed to be enjoying the show. “Ryland,” She said, raising her hand slightly as she walked towards him. “Nice show. I'm surprised you don't have more of a crowd. Losing your touch?” Another boom and one of the fireworks spiraled towards her, the sparks nearly catching the edge of her robes.
They had been friends for a few years now and Ryland understood Emma more than most and she understood him. She smiled slightly as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

A fire within the soul Gah, he hated Mondays. Why did the week always have to start with a Monday. Not only did it mean that the weekend was over but it also meant that he had potions, his least favourite thing to do on the face of the planet. But that was over now and he had some free time. His absolute favourite thing on the face of the planet. It didn't take him long to set up. A tube here and a stand there. Perfect now all he needed was a little fire.
BANG, the first firework shot off and exploded in brilliant blue, he did love it when they lit up the sky. He had been working all week on this batch and frankly he was quite proud of how the colours turned out. A small crowd had begun to gather to enjoy the show and he could hear the oos and aahs. He couldn't wait for them to see the big finish. BANG another went off. This was going well, usually something would have gone wrong by now.
Ryland turned and smiled when he heard her voice, "Hey Emma!" He beamed, "Don't worry, the crowd will come, this is just the beginning." The run away rocked shot past them and his eyes went wide for a second, "Yikes! Sorry! That one must have been a dud. Finnicky things fireworks are. You'll stay and watch won't you? I have a big finish planned." With a wave of his wand he set off two more, followed closely by three more.
Ryland quite liked Emma's company. She was one of those people that he knew he could trust. She was always there when he needed her, even it if was to get him out of trouble, and that happened a little more than he would like to admit. He just hoped that he wouldn't need her today.

Emma found herself smiling, despite the fact that she would never have been caught dead pulling a stunt like this. She much preferred venturing out onto the grounds and documenting the different flora and fauna that Beauregard had to offer. But, Ryland had always been different then her. It was part of what she enjoyed about his company.
She reached down and snuffed out the embers that touched the edge of her robe and shook her head, “No harm, no foul, right?” Surely, if she decided on a career as a Magizoologist, she would experience far worse then a rouge firecracker. Emma watched as a bright red firework exploded above them, the crowd pointing and practically cooing as a few firework birds flew down from the main blast. They swooped around a few students before dissipating into the air.
“Course I’ll stay,” she said as she dropped her bag onto the ground and plopped herself down on top of the half-wall near where Ryland was launching the fireworks. “This is the best seat in the house. After all, you’re not going to launch fireworks at yourself, are you?” She leaned down and nudged him slightly before she pulled out her journal. Idle hands began sketching the way the next firework exploded into a shark and dipped down into the crowd. A few of the girls screamed, Emma simply laughed.
Sure enough, there was a crowd gathering in the Courtyard. Ry always had a knack for drawing a crowd with his hijinks. Sometimes she envied the way that he could assimilate into a crowd. People often had a difficult time understanding her. She closed the journal and found herself wondering what it would be like to be him. “Can I…light one off?” She asked, pulling out her wand from her cloak.

A fire within the soul He mirrored her smile, something he was good at. Ryland fed off the energy of other people. If they were happy, he as happy, if they were sad, he was right there with him. With Emma, Ryland usually felt calm and happy, as was her usual disposition. He found her smile to be contagious. She was one of the few people he regarded as a close friend. He Had plenty of acquaintances and a few enemies but she was one if the few people who he trusted with everything. Sure, they were very different people but they balanced each other.
Ryland glanced quickly at her robes to ensure he hadn't damaged them. "Oh good, " He rubbed the back of his head in classic Ryland fashion. He followed her gaze to the little red birds, "That one is one of my favourites, I have been working on turning the birds inot dragons but they keep blowing fire at me when they go off... needs a little more work."
His smile brightened as she took as seat near by. "No, I don't plan on aiming at myself," A laugh escaped him, exploding from his lips much like his fireworks. He couldn't help but picture the site of himself running away from a burning rocket of light, it really was quite comical.
Upon noticing her sketch book his smile softened but remained on his lips. He loved to watch her draw, the way her hand moved across the paper, transferring the live image almost flawlessly always made him with he was better at drawing. He paused for a moment just to watch her. He enjoyed her expression the most. It wasn't until she spoke that he snapped out of his gaze "Huh? You wanna give it a go?" Ryland's smile grew exuberant once more, "Of course you can, heck, light three or four, " He pointed to a row of rockets set up to the left of them, "Those ones are next, light 'em up Ziegler!"
The set he pointed out had some of the bigger displays in them, including his latest attempt at the house symbols. He couldn't wait for everyone to see them.

"Dragons would be cool. Maybe a phoenix next?" She had always dreamed of seeing them in real life. She dreamed that she would one day be a Magizoologist the way her mother had been...researching medical cures for Wizarding illness. But, she had a long way to go. And her mother's approval to seek.
Emma had half expected Ryland to say no. But she realized — upon seeing the grin that now practically dominated his face — this was exactly the sort of thing he loved. He wanted to share the excitement with someone else. She bit down on her lip…perhaps it wasn’t best to try and be like Ryland when they were both so different. But she certainly wouldn’t back down now. No, she would simply have to think of it as another one of her adventures.
There she was, standing face-to-face with one of the most deadly creatures in all of Wizard-kind: the firework. Em’s thoughts made her smile once again, but didn’t relinquish the anxious feeling building in her chest. She paused, feeling her heart pound beneath her rib cage. She could practically feel everyone’s eyes on her. There were days when she was the outsider — the one that no one could quite figure out. But Ryland had managed to break through her exterior and found warmth and kindness within. Though, it wasn’t easy to express with so many people around. Holding her breath, she held her wand to the fuse of the firework and squeezed one eye shut.
For a second, nothing happened. The tip of her wand was glowing with heat. In a moment, everything changed. The fuse caught and it started burning up quicker then Em had expected. She jumped back slightly and with a bang, the firework launched itself into the air. “Merlin,” she muttered, tucking another stray hair back into place. It was beautiful, an almost exact replica of the Vulpecula House sigil.
Of course, there were a few ‘whoops’ from her housemates and a couple of boos from the other houses. “Think one’s good for now.” She said, feeling her cheeks flush with pink. She pocketed her wand. Perhaps the hijinks were better left to Ryland, after all. “How long have you been working on that one? It was incredible!” She said as she resumed her position on the wall, now pulling her knees up to her chest as she looked up into the sky.

A fire within the soul Her comment made him smiles, now he was even more excited to show her the finale to his little show. He could make fireworks almost better than professionals but he really had outdone himself with this set. He doubted he would ever be able to top this for a while, maybe not ever. Ryland laughed lightly at the look on her face, he could tell she was surprised by his answer, but one thing about him that people commonly forgot was that he was always willing to give someone a shot. Sure, she didn’t strike him as they type to want to set off fireworks in the middle of the afternoon but hey, if she wanted to give it a try, who was he to deny her that?
He watched her intently as she pointed her wand at the firework, for a moment he wondered if she had changed her mind. The look on her face was pure determination but nothing was happen. Ryland opened his mouth to say something but just as he did the firework exploded into the sky. He laughed lightly at her comment and clapped her on the shoulder. “The first one is always the more terrifying; Eventually you come to expect the bang.” He smiled brightly at her. “You sure?” He really didn’t mind if she wanted to do more. He liked watching her take risks, it gave him a rush actually.
“Uh, That one took me two weeks to design, I had trouble getting the transfiguration spell correct on it.” He waved at a few of the students who had started to chant his name with excitement. Ryland responded by pointing his wand and setting off the next three, the sigils of the remaining houses lit up the sky, each just as accurate as the first. The crowd erupted once again, this time louder than before. The group had grown exponentially since he had started and Ryland scanned the hoard. He lived for this stuff, the cheering the excitement. Normally Ryland didn’t feel like he was anything special. H wasn’t terribly smart and he didn’t really have a large friend group, but here, surrounded by people cheering his name he felt like he was the king of the world, like he could do anything. Sure, the feeling only lasted as long as the fireworks did, but for that short amount of time, Ryland actually felt like he belonged there.
Ryland was one of those people that everyone knew about, but no one really took the time to know. People would say hi on their way past, but rarely would someone stop to have a conversation or ask about his day. It was fine, no one ever bullied him or gave him a rough time, but some days he felt like he was just going through the motions. The boy’s smile faded as he finished scanning the crowd. “Looks like it is time to wrap up….” He pointed across the lawn to a group of prefects on their way over. “Guess it is time for the big finale.” Ryland pointed his wand at the remaining fireworks and one by one they shot into the air. It was a dazzling display of light as blues and reds and oranges all flashed in the sky.
Alright baby, don’t fail me now. With a flick of his wrist he set off the last one, it was much larger than the others and didn’t make it nearly as high before it exploded. Emerging from the shell was a large red Phoenix, it speed its wings for a moment lighting up everything, and then, just as fast as it had appeared it erupted once more in a plethora of red and orange lights, giving the great illusion of it burning up into nothingness. The light faded and the sky was almost black with smoke for a moment, and then, out of the darkness one more flash emerged and a small red bird flew up and away from the smoke before it vanished into nothingness.

Emma had always admired Ryland’s resolve when it came to his pranks. She didn’t necessarily agree with all of them, but he was certainly dedicated to making sure they went off without a hitch. He also put a lot of thought into them, she mused. Most people would be satisfied with the status quo, but Ry made sure to go above and beyond. After all, spending nearly two weeks on a transfiguration spell to make sure the house sigils were nearly perfect showed an immense amount of focus…focus that not every prankster seemed to have. “Well consider me, and the rest of this lot impressed, Ry.” She said, giving him another smile as she opened up her notebook and her hands began idly sketching again. Sometimes, it was almost as if her hands already knew the motions and knew what to do. Em had nearly finished sketching the bridge of his nose when she realized that he was pointing at the incoming grouping of Prefects.
Here to ruin the fun, She thought as she watched Ry set off the rest of the fireworks. It wasn’t until the last one that her eyes seemed to light up with something akin to childlike wonder. The phoenix rose up above them, spreading its wings and soaring gracefully through the sky. Emma blinked and in that moment, it seemed to disappear. The darkness that followed was almost unsettling and she thought of reaching for Ryland’s hand for reassurance, but before she knew it, the Phoenix had risen again. Rebirth was fascinating…the ability to burn up completely but return as something new. She bit down on her lip, trying to hide her smile as the Prefects busted up the party.
She pulled out her wand and Ryland’s supplied neatly packaged themselves into the bag on the ground, which she picked up and handed to him as the school’s “law enforcement” finally reached them. “Nothing to see here, boys.” She said, cooly, her face now completely straight. They looked as if they were about to question what was in the bag when Emma started walking, pulling Ryland along with her. Somehow, they usually avoided detention. Ry was well-liked, in her opinion, which she ventured to guess played a part in his escapism. “They didn’t seem happy.” She said as they rounded a corner, now out of sight of the Prefects. Em dropped the bag at his feet and finally cracked a smile. “You’re lucky they didn’t bust you, you know that?” To some, she might have sounded chastising, but with him, it was all in jest.
She sat down on the grass, leaning up against the outside of the building. Her chest was humming with something that she could only guess was adrenaline — the strange feeling of venturing out of her comfort zone. A stray piece of hair had managed to fall from her ponytail, now settling between her eyes and she haphazardly blew air upwards, trying to move it out of her line of sight. “You owe me one.” The strawberry blonde muttered. “You going to that Masquerade on Halloween?”

A fire within the soul He loved how even though she didn’t completely approve of the things he did, she never seemed to judge him on them Sure, there was the occasional ‘I told you so’ or ‘you idiot’ but it was always followed by a smile or a laugh. Even now, as he stood there breaking at least 3 major school rules, there she was, telling him how impressed everyone was. He smiled brightly at her, “I take that as a great compliment.”
He didn’t even watch the phoenix go off, instead he watched her, reveling in her reaction. He could almost see it reflected perfectly in her eyes as she watched his greatest piece of work to date. The oos and ahs of the crowd told him that she wasn’t the only one that enjoyed it either. This was all he needed, he would happily take the three weeks detention that was coming for him now. Besides, he could use the time to think up some new ideas. As she bit her lip lightly he chuckled, he liked that he could make her smile.
As he heard the prefects arrive he braced himself for the hand that would inevitable grab his shirt and pull him to the ground, he shut his eyes, never liking this part. The hand however, never came. Instead came his bag, shoved into his hands by Emma. Before he can even speak she is sending the prefects on their way. He simply smiled at them as Emma pulled him away and he couldn’t help but laugh. “That Miss Zieger, was epic, did you see their faces?” He griped her shoulder lightly and smiled at her, “Me? Busted? Never, not with you around.” This was his roundabout way of thanking her, he knew that without her, he would be in detention a lot more than he already was.
He stood besides her, leaning on the wall with this hands behind his head. He loved the adrenaline rush he got from all this. He laughed again as he looked down at her before he reached over and moved the hair for her. “You know, I think I am rubbing off on you. Quite the rebel you are.” He paused at her question, thinking on it for a moment. “That depends…. Are you gonna be there?” He eyed her softly as he retook his stance on the wall, “I mean, dances aren’t any fun if you don’t know anyone there. Especially when everyone is in a mask, Then again…. If I don’t go, who is going to spike the punch?”

There were times when she was thankful for the calm of her life. She was thankful that she was ordinary and rarely broke the rules. But it was moments like this, with adrenaline coursing through her veins, sitting next to her very best friend, that she was also thankful for everything that was opposite of her. She was thankful for rule-breaking and back-talking and skirting around detention with Ryland. He moved her hair and her face stung slightly where his fingers had brushed her forehead. She wasn’t used to physical contact. It rarely happened to her.
“Is it really rebellion? Or is it just self-preservation?” Emma asked as she pulled out her sketchbook from her bag. The image of the Phoenix was still imprinted in her mind — something she doubted she would forget any time soon — but she wanted to make sure that she captured all the details. Her hand moved across the page, making little tick marks to represent the fireworks as she sketched out the wing. She didn’t look up when he asked if she was going to the masquerade.
To be fair, she had barely thought about it. She wasn’t the type of girl that went out of her way to find a date. She also wasn’t the type of girl that would be caught dead dancing in front of people. She bit down on her lip as she drew the curve of the Phoenix’s head as she heard Ryland mention spiking the punch. “You wouldn’t dare! You barely skirted that run-in with the Prefects!” But, she was smiling. Of course he was going to do something reckless. Which would, in turn, make the whole party seem more exciting. She had to look up at him from her position on the ground, and when she did, she saw a near perfect halo of sunlight around him.
“You know, from this angle you look like a bloody saint,” she rolled her eyes and her hand slipped, causing the phoenix’s tail feathers to go slightly out of proportion. “But we all know that can’t be true.” She laughed and flipped the page of her journal, only to return to his previous question. Was she going to go? “I hadn’t really thought about it until now.” She answered honestly. “But I suppose I’ll go. Couldn’t hurt, right? Plus, if it’s awful I can always sneak off to the library. Bet it’d be dead that night.”

A fire within the soul "Rebellion, preservation, " He shrugged at her question, "I think they are the same thing." He smiled as her sketchbook emerged once again. He watched as she continued her drawing, he loved how she could recall every detail. Her drawings put his rough draft drawings of his fireworks to shame. He really needed to start asking her to make the sketches he worked from. He figured she must have a photographic memory or something, every detail was spot on, as if the firework was still in the sky right in front of her.
He couldn't help but smile at the look of concentration on her face, if he really thought about it, he thought the way she bit down on her lip was sort of cute. He laughed at her comment, she knew as well as he did that if he didn't spike it, someone else would, but he was more than likely to do it himself. It was classic Ryland, and it most likely always would be. "Don't doubt me Em, you know that without it the dance will be terribly dull. Everyone dances better after the punch is spiked." Everyone accept him that is, Ryland attended most school dances, but he never actually danced. Unbeknownst to most, the young man had two left feet, and he would rather keep that fact to himself.
"Hmm, Saint Ryland, has a nice ring to it if I do say so myself," he took up a heroic stance and looked towards the sky as if he had just done something epic. "Oh, that stings," He places a hand on his heart after her next statement. Not that he could argue, the fact of the matter was that if he was anything, he was a little demon or something.
"Well, if you are going, then I am definitely going to be there. As long as you are around I can get away with almost anything. " He laughed and smiled at her. In all honesty, he wasn't always looking to get into trouble, but he usually managed to find a way, whether he was looking for it or not. " But really, it might be fun, eat, drink, dance a little." She was right, the library would surly be empty. "Tell you what, if it is boring, I'll go with you."
He sighed as he looked around the courtyard, he loved this time of year. It wasn't too hot and it wasn't too cold. He took a leaning stance on the tree once more and closed his eyes lightly, feeling the breeze hit is face as he inhaled the scent of the season around him. "Hey, you wanna have a camp fire tonight?" The young blond loved campfires, the smell of the burning wood, the crackle as it all ignites, all of it, especially the roasted marshmallows.
